Khachatur Abovyan's portrait

Literature and Art Museum Named After Yeghishe Charents

During the first 50 years, Khachatur Abovyan's portrait underwent great tests. The picture was lost after the disappearance of the writer. The picture was found by Abovyan's son Vardan, who, returning to the Caucasus and after a long search, found the picture in a terrible condition, worn out, the paint falling off in places. At his request, the artist Gevorg Bashinjaghyan restored the picture, cut the worn edges, pasted them on paper, filled the open spaces with matching paints. And the author of the picture is the artist from Dorpat, Ludwig von Meidel. He painted Abovyan around 1830, when Abovyan had just arrived in Dorpat and was 20-21 years old.
