The Return of Queen Zabel, 1909, oil on canvas.

National Gallery of Armenia

This painting by Surenyantsi, created in 1909, among other works of the artist, also has a psychological character. Dedicated to an important and nationalistic event for the Armenian people, it simultaneously reveals the mental drama of the Armenian queen. In the center of the symmetrical composition stands Zabel, her gaze fixed on the ground, but with a noble posture. On either side of her are the courtiers who are dressing the apricot and handing out the royal insignia. The composition of the painting is based on delicate strokes and linear rhythm, which give a gentle vibration and musicality to the canvas.
